Organised by Foodsmatter.com and Michelle Berridale-Johnson the Awards took place on the 17th April 2012 at the Museum of London in Docklands with all awards presented by celebrity chef Antony Worral Thompson.
Sponsored by ‘Produced in Italy’, The Foodamentalists Gluten, wheat and dairy-free Frangipane Mince Pies beat stiff competition from well known gluten free food supplier, Livwell, supermarket chain Morrisons and Christine’s Puddings.
The judges loved them, saying:
‘Nice idea with frangipane topping – looks attractive and appetising – golden and deep-filled. Quite sweet, but lovely combination of flavours and good tasty pastry.’
The Foodamentalists also won three other commendations.
In the Foods manufactured for Service Award for their Golden Batter Mix, they achieved a Highly Commended. The judges said, ‘Big bonus that this is egg free – but it makes a very light batter maybe more suited to tempura. Very useful.’
In the Pies, Flans and Pizza’s category their Pork, Black Pudding & Caramelised Red Onion Pie received a Commended. The judges loved the ‘Excellent freefrom hot crust pastry – first there. Pork filling a little too finely chopped – otherwise it would have been a winner.’
And finally, in the Innovation Award, their Brown Bread Mix was also awarded a Commended with comments such as: ‘Interesting mix of flours and great to be aiming for such a health-giving profile, high in Omega 3 fatty acids and fibre. The baked loaf has a good deep colour and a nice fresh texture.’
Steven Taylor, owner and the brains behind the company is thrilled with the Foodamentalist’s achievements. He said, “These awards are so important to promote awareness of the great freefrom foods that are coming onto the market. At The Foodamentalists we specialise in ‘everything everyone else doesn’t’, so our products are a bit unique. We also want to make it simple and easy for our customers to enjoy good food. Why should you miss out on great tasting food because you have allergies?”
The Foodamentalists also make pastry mixes, batters and coatings, chip shop batter, yorkshire pudding mix, onion bhaji mixes, bread, a chicken pie and pork pies. Stevan has loads of other plans for new products, all of which are gluten free and many are dairy free too, possibly even egg free in the future.
Well known celebrity TV chef and coeliac Phil Vickery tasted the Foodamentalists Yorkshire Pudding mix and recently tweeted, “Fantastic Yorkshire pud mix, some of the best” and Stevan also recently won the FoodsYouCan Great Taste Award 2012, the Small Business Sunday (SBS) Twitter award from Theo Paphitis and The Great Taste Gold Award 2011.
