This week I felt that nasty little tingling sensation just as I was going to bed on Wednesday, after a late night working in London. I had a dose of L-lysine, a vitamine shot of Berocca and whacked on some Zorirax and went to bed praying for the best.
The worst time to get the beginnings of a cold sore is at night or during the night because the little blighters can really take hold while you’re sleeping. Anyway let’s just say I woke up with a very swollen mouth and it looked like I was going to get a whole family of cold sores.
I’ve been lucky, eating healthily and avoiding processed foods, early nights, getting plenty of good exercise and the trusy L-lysine and immune system boosters have kept me relatively cold sore free for months and months. I can’t remember the last big bad one. OK I can remember, all too well, but it was a distant memory. So on Thursday morning I was not happy.
I found this Boots Cold Sore Lotion on my desk. I have no memory of buying it but there it was.
I must have seen it on the shelf and thought, I’ll try that, but then not had a cold sore to experiment on.
So the mystery cold sore lotion had its first outing. Firstly, it’s not really a lotion, it’s more like a really strong smelling nail varnish remover, it’s clear and a liquid and boy did it sting.
It reminds of something my Nan gave me for my cold sores when I was really small and plagued with them. It was an eu du cologne but it stang like billio. Not sure how it works, and although it is a bit stingy, it’s worth it.
You basically soak a bit of cotton wool in the liquid and dab it onto the cold sore. Owwww… still applying as we speak. I think it’s working though.
I took a picture of what it looked like this morning. The photo makes them look worse, but you can see, without action, I would have a whole mouthful of the ugly little blisters.
I am dabbing on the lotion as often as I can and they are certainly not getting any bigger.
One of them I think got too far to be eradicated completely, but the others are retreating slowly from whence they came.
Like thieves in the night they steal into my house and creep along my nerves until they find the weak spot on my poor lip.
So I am fighting back by burning their heads off and poisoning them with this strong, stinging lotion. It even makes your eyes water. I’ll let you know how I get on and how long they live before they surrender and leave my lips alone.
I began with the teabag pressed on the cold sore idea which someone who read ‘The Do’s and don’ts of cold sores’ suggested. I kept putting it down somewhere and eventually lost it. Then I looked down at the cup of tea I was drinking and wondered… is this the tea I just made with the cold sore teabag? Argh! Gross! Tea down sink promptly.
And I know why I got these; I’m a bit stressed and tired, so early nights, lots of vitamin C, L-lysine and Echinacea are in order.
Cold sore die! Be gone. Go away. Get off my lip!
